UBC BIE Student
Saskia Vaisey
Name: Saskia Vaisey
From: British Columbia, Canada
Program: Bachelor of International Economics (BIE)
Why are you interested in studying international economics?
As the economy is central to the reasons that governments make decisions, I want to understand the intricacies of this system on an international scale. I love that economics is about problem-solving and complex analysis.
What are your career goals, and why do you believe studying international economics will help you achieve these goals?
I aspire to work in environmental policy. I would ultimately like to contribute to efforts aimed at including nature in economic models. Ecosystem services are essential to our well-being and especially those of the world’s poor, but are too often disregarded. Using an understanding of international economics, maybe I will be able to find solutions that benefit the environment without compromising business.
What do you do for fun at UBC and in Vancouver? Have you joined any UBC student clubs or gone to events on campus yet?
UBC has so many clubs! You can get involved in close to any area of interest. I’ve joined the Rotaract Club – a service group – and am working with the Economics Student Association to organize a conference on livability in Vancouver, focusing on the Downtown Eastside. On a weekend, you can also find me playing a game of Settlers of Catan with other BIE students or heading out with friends from my residence.
Care to share a little-known but interesting fact about yourself?
I have an identical twin sister.
