Mengyuan (Caroline) Li

Name:          Mengyuan (Caroline) Li

From:           Qingdao, China

Program:     Bachelor of International Economics (BIE)

Why are you interested in studying international economics?

International development is definitely one of the most discussed and concerned issues. As an international student myself, I always want to know how countries make decisions or change strategies while facing worldwide competition and seeking cooperation. Economic factors are essential, and economic behaviors reflect how individuals, businesses and the world work, which are truly interesting to me.

What are your career goals, and why do you believe studying international economics will help you achieve these goals?

I want to become an economic analyst in an international company. I believe only if we can put theory to practice, can theory make sense. By doing that, I can get into the real economic world and dedicate all I’ve learned to real world challenges. I believe the BIE program will give me a good educational foundation for that.

What do you do for fun at UBC and in Vancouver? Have you joined any UBC student clubs or gone to events on campus yet?

Vancouver is an amazing place to be explored. There are lots of good small restaurants in the UBC village. The Chinese food there is quiet delicious, which reminds me of home. Now I’m enjoying the BIE lounge, a space for all BIE students!

I joined the German Jam at the beginning of the semester. It’s an interesting weekly event that offers opportunity to learn German songs. I’ve met many nice friends there. I joined the Economic Student Association (ESA) as well.

Care to share a little-known but interesting fact about yourself?

I’m an enthusiastic language learner. I’m taking a German course now, and am learning Korean by myself. By learning languages, I got to know so many interesting facts about different countries!
