Name:             Jon Nieman

From:              California, USA

Program:        Bachelor of International Economics (BIE)

Why are you interested in studying international economics?

My interest in economics began during my high school course in macroeconomics. Understanding how parties interact using an economic system of thought appeals to my analytic personality. A global context is imperative because, figuratively speaking, no nation is an island. Any transaction that occurs today likely has connections to a vast network of economic interactions that led to that single choice, and understanding this allows one to study the complete picture instead of merely one component.

What are your career goals, and why do you believe studying international economics will help you achieve these goals?

After graduating from UBC, I plan to pursue a Master of Business Administration. The fields of energy, automobiles, finance, and electronics are all areas of interest. A background in international economics will provide me with not only the ability to view situations and problems rationally and holistically but also the tools with which I will solve them.

What do you do for fun at UBC and in Vancouver? Have you joined any UBC student clubs or gone to events on campus yet?

I love to work out in the Bird Coop gym and explore the city, which reminds me a lot of my closest city of San Francisco. I am a brother of the Zeta Psi fraternity and currently serve as a chair of philanthropy. I am also a big fan of UBC’s radio station — 101.9 CITR — and am hoping to free up some time to begin volunteering there.

Care to share a little-known but interesting fact about yourself?

I don’t live on a farm but do own twelve chickens, three dogs, two cats, and have also owned goats, rabbits, and lizards.
